Our History

Over 20 years ago, a group of local activists, organizations and agencies came together to launch West Side One Stop for Coordinated Senior Services, now called One Stop Senior Services. Their goal: to provide seniors with a single location to apply for all benefits and entitlements. For many years, One Stop housed workers from other agencies in addition to its own small staff.

In the mid-1980s, when cutbacks forced agencies to withdraw their workers, One Stop raised funds to make up for the loss in human resources. That entrepreneurial spirit has been a hallmark of One Stop.

In 1992, as the problem of elder abuse surfaced and more and more victims turned to One Stop, we developed the One Stop Senior Support Project, a program of counseling and budgetary assistance, information, referral, and outreach that provides help and hope for victims and their care givers.

In 2000, One Stop received a bequest from Bianca Rosenberg, founding board member, which has enhanced our financial stability and has served as an incentive for us to evaluate our current services and effectively plan future growth.

Today, One Stop is a model of coordinated services, and the only Manhattan center serving seniors with representatives of key government agencies on-site. Its staff of 14 full time and five part time employees, including two Title V employees, two volunteers, as well as co-located employees from the Social Security Administration and the Human Resources Administration all work hand in hand, linking the multitude of local services and government entitlements to seniors.

One Stop is widely and favorably known throughout the community for the connections it has made for elderly New Yorkers, and for the respectful manner in which it serves its clients. In a recent survey, over 70% of our clients reported they learned about One Stop through friends or family members, who have been clients, and nearly 90% rated our assistance as Effective.

One Stop is proud of its legacy and will continue to strive in the next 20 years to enable older persons to remain independent and live more securely in their own homes, as well as to search for new ways to help them improve their lives.
